How to Calculate Silver Melt Value
Silver melt value is calculated using three values: the weight of the silver item, the purity of the silver, and the current spot price per troy ounce.
Melt Value = Weight (troy oz) × Purity × Spot Price
For example, a Morgan Silver Dollar contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver (the coin weighs 0.8594 troy oz at 90% purity). At current spot per troy ounce, its melt value is approximately calculated above.
Silver is measured in troy ounces (not standard avoirdupois ounces). One troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams, compared to 28.35 grams in a standard ounce. Always use troy weight when calculating precious metals values.
