About Melt Value

Melt value (also called intrinsic value) is the value of the raw metal content in a coin or piece of bullion, calculated using the current spot price. It represents the minimum floor value of any precious metal item.

US coins minted before 1965 contain 90% silver. At today's silver price of current spot per troy ounce, a pre-1965 quarter contains approximately significant in silver — roughly 16-20x its face value.

Collector value (numismatic value) can be significantly higher than melt value for key dates, high-grade examples, and rare varieties. Always check both melt value and numismatic guides before selling silver coins.
